USA Today, TheStreet, Street Insider: what a premium placement does

Key takeaways

  • A premium placement puts your story on the outlet's own domain: a real, live URL you can share.
  • Big names add credibility with people; wide news networks add reach. A strong campaign uses both.
  • Some outlets mark press pages noindex, so they won't appear in Google. That's fine for credibility, but they shouldn't be your only channels.
  • Use "As seen in" honestly: link to the actual placement and don't imply a reporter wrote about you.

"Featured on USA Today" is a powerful line on a website. It's also one of the most misunderstood. Business owners hear about premium press placements and wonder: is it really USA Today? What does it actually do? And is it worth paying more than a regular news distribution?

Here's a straight answer to each of those questions.

What a premium placement is

When your press release is distributed to a premium outlet like USA Today, TheStreet or Street Insider, it's published on that outlet's own website, usually in a section dedicated to press releases. You get a real, live URL on the outlet's own domain, such as a page under usatoday.com, that anyone can open, read and share.

What it is not: an article written by one of the outlet's reporters. These are distributed press releases. You choose the story, it goes live within days, and it carries the outlet's name. That's the trade-off. You get speed and certainty instead of the unpredictability of pitching journalists.

What the big names add

Credibility with people

A prospective customer who sees your business on a site they recognize trusts you a little more. That's the most immediate and practical benefit. A link to a USA Today page in a sales email, on your website or on social media is instantly recognizable in a way that "published on 80 news sites" isn't.

Trusted sources for search engines and AI

AI assistants lean heavily on earned media when they cite sources. Muck Rack's December 2025 research, based on more than one million AI-cited links, found about 94% of citations came from non-paid sources, and press release citations had grown five-fold since mid-2025. Established national outlets are exactly the kind of sources these systems already know and trust.

How premium outlets differ from news networks

A full campaign usually combines both:

  • Premium outlets are a handful of recognizable names. They carry the most credibility per placement.
  • News networks publish your story across dozens, or even a hundred, local and national news sites at once. They create reach and the "mentioned everywhere" pattern that tells search engines and AI your business is established.

One recognizable name plus wide network coverage is stronger than either alone. That's why our higher plans include both. You can see every channel in our distribution table.

What "noindex" means, and why we tell you

Some outlets, including Street Insider, mark their press release pages with a noindex tag. Google explains that noindex is "used to prevent indexing content by search engines that support the noindex rule." In practice, the page is live and anyone with the link can read it, but it won't show up in Google search results.

That has two consequences:

  • The placement still gives you a real link and a recognizable name for your website and sales materials. That's real credibility value.
  • It won't help your search rankings directly, and AI tools that rely on search results are less likely to find it.

That's why we label these outlets "Credibility" placements and pair them with indexed outlets. A campaign made up only of noindex placements would look great in a report and do little for your visibility.

About the links

Many outlets mark links in press releases as sponsored or nofollow. Google recommends that "advertisements or paid placements" be qualified with rel="sponsored", and its spam policies list optimized anchor-text links in distributed press releases as link spam. So the value of a premium placement isn't link juice. It's the mention, the credibility and the shareable URL. Anyone promising that a press release will "boost your rankings with a USA Today backlink" is misunderstanding how it works.

How to use "As seen in" the right way

  • Link to the real placement. Let visitors click through and see it for themselves.
  • Don't imply editorial coverage. "Our story on USA Today" is accurate. "USA Today named us the best" isn't, unless a reporter actually did.
  • Use the outlet's name, not its logo, unless you have permission. Logos are trademarks.
  • Keep it current. Fresh placements are more convincing than a single one from years ago.

Is premium worth it?

If you mainly want broad reach for search and AI, a network campaign does a lot of the work. If you sell to customers who are weighing who to trust, such as homeowners, patients, clients or other businesses, the big names add a layer of credibility that's hard to get any other way. Most businesses get the best result from combining them.
