Key takeaways
- OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on February 9, 2026; ads appear below a response and are clearly labeled.
- OpenAI says ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers, and advertisers can't shape, rank or alter responses.
- Ads show only on the Free and Go plans, never to users under 18, and never near health, mental health or political topics.
- What ChatGPT says in its answer depends on sources like earned media, which made up about 82% of AI-cited links (Muck Rack, Dec 2025).
ChatGPT now has ads. For business owners, that raises an obvious question: should you pay to appear in ChatGPT, or invest in getting ChatGPT to recommend you on its own? The answer depends on understanding what ChatGPT ads actually are, and what they're not.
How ChatGPT ads work
According to OpenAI's help center (checked October 18, 2026):
- Launch: ad testing started in the United States on February 9, 2026, and is rolling out gradually to more regions.
- Placement: "You may see ads below a ChatGPT response." Ads are separate and clearly labeled.
- Who sees them: users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't see ads, and ads aren't shown to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
- Where they don't appear: ads aren't eligible to appear near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health or politics.
The key point: ads don't change the answer
OpenAI is explicit: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." It also notes that seeing an ad "doesn't mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser."
So a ChatGPT ad buys you a labeled spot next to the answer. It does not buy you a place in the answer. When a customer asks "who's the best roofer in Mesa?", the businesses ChatGPT names in its response are chosen the same way whether or not anyone is advertising.
What shapes the answer itself
When ChatGPT searches the web, it finds sites through OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and leans on sources it considers credible. Muck Rack's December 2025 analysis of more than one million AI-cited links found about 94% came from non-paid sources, and earned media alone made up 82%. Earned media means coverage you don't pay to place as an ad: news articles, features and published press releases on trusted sites.
Content quality matters too. The KDD 2024 study that introduced generative engine optimization found that statistics, quotations and cited sources raised a source's visibility in AI answers by roughly 30-40%.
ChatGPT ads vs earned media at a glance
| ChatGPT ads | Earned media | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | Below the answer, labeled as an ad | Inside the answer, as a mention or cited source |
| Influences the answer? | No, per OpenAI | Yes: it's what AI reads and cites |
| Who sees it | Free and Go users in rollout regions, adults only | Every user, every plan, plus other AI assistants |
| Sensitive topics | Not shown near health, mental health or politics | No such restriction |
| When you stop paying | Visibility stops | Published coverage stays up |
| Works on Google, Perplexity, Gemini? | No, ChatGPT only | Yes |
When ChatGPT ads make sense
- You have a clear offer and budget to test a new channel.
- You want visibility for commercial questions right away while longer-term work builds.
- You're not in a category where ads are restricted.
When earned media matters more
- You want to be the recommendation, not an ad next to it.
- You're in health care or another regulated field where ads may be limited and trust matters most.
- You want visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews at once.
- You want results that keep working after a campaign ends.
The bottom line
Ads and earned media aren't rivals; they do different jobs. Ads rent space beside the answer. Earned media helps decide what the answer says. AImpact focuses on the second: press campaigns on trusted news sites, an AI search optimization foundation and monthly AI visibility tracking. (See also how to rank in ChatGPT.)
