How contractors get recommended by ChatGPT and AI search

Key takeaways

  • Homeowners ask AI who's reliable, who serves their area and what a job should cost.
  • Service and area pages with real costs or ranges help AI match you to local questions.
  • Licenses, years in business and warranties stated as facts give AI details it can repeat.
  • Earned local coverage keeps working after ads stop; about 94% of AI-cited links are non-paid (Muck Rack).

"Who's the most reliable roofer in Mesa?" "How much should a new AC unit cost?" Homeowners now put these questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI before they call anyone. The companies AI names are the ones it can find, understand and verify. Here's how contractors become one of them.

What homeowners ask

  • Trust: "Most reliable roofer near me?" "Best-reviewed HVAC company in [city]?"
  • Cost: "How much does it cost to replace a water heater?"
  • Urgency: "24/7 plumber in [city]?"
  • Decision: "Repair or replace my AC?"

1. Build pages AI can match

Create a clear page for each service and each main area you serve. Include what the job involves, how long it takes, and real cost ranges where you can share them. Cost and timeline questions are exactly what AI tries to answer, and research on AI answers found specific statistics raise a source's visibility by roughly 30-40% (KDD 2024). Avoid near-identical city pages with only the name swapped; they add no value and Google treats mass-produced pages as spam.

2. State your proof as facts

License numbers (exactly as issued), years in business, jobs completed, warranties and certifications. "Licensed since 2009, more than 4,000 roofs completed" is something AI can repeat. "Top-rated, best in town" isn't.

3. Let AI crawl your site

Make sure search and AI crawlers aren't blocked. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot so your site can appear in its results, and Google says pages need to be indexed to appear in AI Overviews. Some website security plugins block bots by default, so check.

4. Earn local coverage

About 94% of AI-cited links come from non-paid sources and 82% from earned media (Muck Rack, Dec 2025). Lead sites and ads stop when you stop paying; published local coverage keeps working. Good contractor stories:

  • Seasonal advice (pre-monsoon roof checks, AC tune-ups before summer)
  • A new service line, area, truck or hire
  • Community projects and donated work
  • Milestones such as years in business or jobs completed

5. Keep your business info identical everywhere

The same company name, phone and service area on your site, Google Business Profile and every directory, so AI connects all the mentions to one company.

Check the results

Ask AI your customers' questions monthly and record who gets named. Perplexity shows its sources, which makes it a great place to see what AI trusts in your trade. (See how Perplexity chooses what to cite.)
