Key takeaways
- Perplexity says PerplexityBot is what surfaces and links websites in its search results, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt.
- PerplexityBot isn't used to crawl content for AI model training, so allowing it is about search visibility.
- In the GEO study, keyword stuffing did 10% worse than doing nothing on Perplexity, while sources, quotes and statistics helped.
- Coverage on trusted, independent sites gives Perplexity more credible sources that mention you.
Perplexity is the most transparent of the major AI assistants: every answer comes with numbered sources you can click. That makes it a great place to see AI visibility in action. Either your website or a story about your business is one of those sources, or it isn't.
Here's how Perplexity finds pages, what research says makes a page more likely to be cited, and how to check your own site.
What a "citation" means in AI search
In traditional SEO, a citation usually means a listing of your business name, address and phone on another site. In AI search, a citation is a source an assistant links to as evidence for its answer. Both matter: consistent listings help AI recognize your business, and source citations are how it shows its work.
How Perplexity finds your pages
Perplexity documents two agents:
- PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models, and recommends allowing it in your robots.txt file so your site can appear in search results.
- Perplexity-User fetches a page when a user's question calls for it, and may link to that page in the answer.
Perplexity notes that robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect.
Check: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure PerplexityBot isn't blocked. Also check whether a security or firewall setting at your web host is blocking bots in general.
What makes a page more citable
The KDD 2024 study that introduced generative engine optimization tested content changes on Perplexity as well as a research engine. Two lessons stand out:
- Substance wins. Adding statistics, quotations and cited sources improved visibility in AI answers by roughly 30-40%.
- Keyword stuffing backfires. On Perplexity, it performed 10% worse than leaving the content alone.
In practice: answer the question directly near the top of the page, use real numbers, name the person speaking, and link to where your facts come from.
Be one of the sources, or be in them
Perplexity often cites news articles and independent sites rather than business websites. Muck Rack's December 2025 analysis of more than a million AI-cited links found about 94% came from non-paid sources and 82% from earned media. A story about your business on a trusted news site can become the source Perplexity cites when someone asks about your field. How to check your Perplexity visibility
- Ask Perplexity three to five questions your customers ask, word for word.
- Note whether you're mentioned and which numbered sources appear.
- Click the sources: are they your site, news coverage, directories or competitors?
- Repeat monthly with the same wording and compare.
