Key takeaways
- SEO aims to rank pages in search results; AEO aims to be the direct answer; GEO aims to be cited in AI-written answers.
- They build on each other: Google says pages must be indexed to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- GEO research found statistics, quotations and cited sources raised AI visibility 30-40%; keyword stuffing didn't help.
- You don't need three vendors. You need one plan that covers a crawlable site, clear answers and trusted mentions.
SEO, AEO, GEO. If it feels like marketing invents a new acronym every year, you're not wrong. The good news: these aren't three competing strategies. They're three layers of the same goal, getting your business found when people look for what you do.
The short version
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Goal | Rank in a list of results | Be the direct answer | Be cited in an AI-written answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Key signals | Relevance, links, technical health | Clear question-and-answer content | Facts, citations, trusted mentions |
SEO: the foundation
Search engine optimization makes your pages crawlable, understandable and relevant enough to rank. It's still the base of everything else. Google says there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practices: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. OpenAI and Perplexity both say their search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot) are what surface websites in their search results. If those systems can't find your page, no acronym will help. (More in SEO isn't dead. It's how AI finds you.)
AEO: answer the question directly
Answer engine optimization grew up with featured snippets and voice assistants. The idea is simple: when someone asks a question, your page should answer it clearly and quickly, ideally in the first sentence or two under a heading that matches the question. FAQ sections and plain-language definitions are classic AEO.
GEO: earn the citation
Generative engine optimization is the newest layer. AI assistants don't just pick one answer; they read several sources and write their own response, citing the ones they trust. The KDD 2024 study that named GEO found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources improved a source's visibility in AI answers by roughly 30-40%, while keyword stuffing offered little to no improvement. GEO also reaches beyond your website: coverage on trusted news sites gives AI more credible sources that mention you. (Full explainer: What is generative engine optimization?)
How they overlap
- SEO without GEO can rank a page that AI never quotes because it says nothing specific.
- GEO without SEO produces great content that AI search can't find.
- AEO sits in the middle: clear answers help both rankings and AI citations.
Which one do you need?
All three, but not three vendors. A small business needs a site search engines can crawl and index, pages that answer customer questions plainly, and independent coverage that gives AI a reason to trust you. That's how every AImpact plan works: an AI-ready SEO foundation, press campaigns on trusted news sites, and monthly AI visibility tracking.
