Key takeaways
- Patients ask AI practical questions: hours, insurance, emergencies and whether a treatment is worth it.
- Answer those questions as plain text on your site, not in images or PDFs, so AI can read and repeat them.
- Google says pages need to be indexed to appear in AI Overviews, with no special AI markup required.
- Local news and community coverage give AI independent reasons to mention your practice.
A cracked tooth on a Saturday morning used to mean a frantic search through map listings. Now many patients just ask ChatGPT or Google: "emergency dentist open today near me?" The practices named in that answer get the call. Here's how dental practices make sure they're in it.
What patients ask AI
- Urgent: "Emergency dentist open on weekends near me?"
- Practical: "Which dentists near me take my insurance?" "Who's accepting new patients?"
- Treatment research: "Is a dental implant worth it?" "Invisalign vs braces for adults?"
- Choosing: "Best family dentist in [city]?"
Step 1: put the answers on your site, as text
Google says important content should be available in text form, and that there are no special AI files or markup needed to appear in AI Overviews: a page simply needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. For dental practices, the most common gap is information that only exists in an image, a PDF or a phone call. Write out:
- Hours, including evenings and weekends, and how emergencies are handled
- Insurance plans accepted and payment options
- Whether you're accepting new patients and what the first visit involves
- One page per major service (implants, Invisalign, crowns, pediatric, cosmetic) with what to expect and typical timelines
Step 2: make treatment pages worth citing
For "is it worth it" questions, AI looks for clear, balanced explanations. Research on AI answers found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources raised visibility by roughly 30-40% (KDD 2024). A page where your dentist explains, in their own words, who is a good candidate for implants and what recovery looks like is far more citable than a sales page. Keep claims factual and avoid promising outcomes.
Step 3: be part of local news
AI favors what independent sources say. Muck Rack's December 2025 study found about 82% of AI-cited links came from earned media. Good dental stories include a new dentist joining, new technology, free community dental days, seasonal advice (back-to-school checkups) and practice anniversaries. Never include patient details without proper written permission.
Step 4: keep listings consistent
Your practice name, dentists, address, phone and hours should match on your website, Google Business Profile and directories. When details conflict, AI has less confidence about which is right.
Step 5: check what AI says
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google your patients' questions every month and note who's named. If competitors appear and you don't, look at which sources AI cites for them. (See how to show up in Google AI Overviews.)
AImpact handles this for dental practices every month: an AI-ready site foundation, local press and tracking. See AI visibility for dentists or get a free AI visibility check.
