How restaurants get recommended by ChatGPT and AI search

Key takeaways

  • Diners ask AI specific questions: dish, vibe, patio, kids, dietary needs and hours.
  • A text menu and written-out details let AI match you to those questions; PDFs and photos often can't be read as easily.
  • Food press and local news are what AI cites for "best" questions; about 82% of AI-cited links are earned media.
  • Keep hours and details identical on your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp and delivery apps.

"Best tacos in Tempe?" "Brunch with a patio near me?" "Kid-friendly dinner in Chandler?" Diners now ask AI these questions, and AI answers with a short list. Restaurants that AI knows well, from their own site and from local coverage, are the ones on it.

Diners ask specific questions

Restaurant questions are rarely just "restaurants near me." They're about a dish, an occasion, a feature or a need:

  • Dish: "Best birria tacos in [city]?"
  • Occasion: "Romantic dinner spot in [city]?"
  • Feature: "Patio brunch near me?" "Restaurants with private rooms?"
  • Need: "Gluten-free friendly restaurants?" "Kid-friendly dinner?"

AI can only match you to these if it knows the details.

1. Put your menu on your site as text

Google says important content should be available in textual form. A menu that exists only as a PDF or photo is harder for search engines and AI to read and quote. List dishes, short descriptions, dietary labels and prices as text on your site.

2. Write out the details people ask about

Hours (including holidays), patio, parking, reservations, private events, kids' menu, accessibility and dietary options. Each one is a question someone is asking AI right now.

3. Get into local food coverage

For "best" questions, AI leans on what independent sources say. Muck Rack's December 2025 study found about 82% of AI-cited links came from earned media. Restaurant news that earns coverage:

  • Grand openings and new locations
  • Seasonal or new menus
  • Chef and team stories
  • Community events, fundraisers and anniversaries
  • Awards and local recognition

Research on AI answers found that specific facts and quotations raise visibility by roughly 30-40% (KDD 2024), so a story with your chef's own words and real details beats a generic announcement.

4. Keep every listing identical

Hours and details that differ between your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp and delivery apps confuse diners and AI alike. Update them all together whenever something changes.

5. Check what AI recommends

Ask AI the questions your diners ask, monthly, and see who's listed and which sources are cited. Those sources show you where coverage would help most. (More on showing up in Google AI Overviews.)
